Minimally Invasive Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD)

Medical City Plano offers the Impella® ventricular assist device (VAD), a short-term mechanical heart pump that assists weakened hearts with pumping blood, which allows the heart to rest and recover some of its normal function. Impella devices are indicated for use during events such as high-risk percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) and ongoing cardiogenic shock following acute myocardial infarction or open heart surgery.

Doctors insert the Impella 2.5 and Impella CP, minimally-invasive circulatory support (MCS) devices, into the femoral artery through a small incision made in the patient’s leg. This process is much less invasive than typical heart therapies, which require surgeons to open the patient’s chest. The Impella 5.0 allows for minimally invasive placement through a single artery and into the left ventricle, with several options for the access site.
